An Overdue Update

October 7th, 2011

Life sure is different without internet in your house. I like it that way though, and have no desire to change it. But, that in itself is a lot of the reason that I haven’t updated my blog recently. Jonathan and I have been busy doing all sorts of things and I’m going to make an attempt to tell you about at least a few of the things we have been up to recently.

First I’ll go ahead and give you a breif report on our backpacking trip and show you a few of the best pictures. We decided to go to Idaho this year and we took the whole family with us for a total of 17 people, including 2 babies. It was a lot of fun! The mothers and babies did awesome…but I don’t think I would do it myself. :-)

Our Group

Our Group at the trailhead

Brooklyn and I fixed each others hair before we headed out.

We camped our first night at a lake which was a long 7 miles from the car. We found it to be infested with mosquitos but we made the most of it. The next day we did a day hike to another lake and then some of us went on over the next pass to a group of 4 lakes in a row. Here’s a couple pictures from our day.

Jonathan & Suzanne Day 2

Matthew & Faith

Day 3 we headed on to yet another lake. We spent a couple days there and had lots of fun. Part of our group went on a day hike, part of us stayed at camp, and part of us moved on to the next lake ahead of the group. Jonathan and I stayed at camp that day. Here’s a couple pictures from our time at this lake.

Jonathan & Suzanne on the trail

Jonathan made himself a raft! :-)

Savannah & Rachel playing in the water

Day 5 we hiked to yet another lake where we caught up with the rest of our group again. However, we had still left the tired day hikers at the previous lake so had to wait yet another day for them to catch up so we could all be back together again. While we were separated from Dad, Jonathan got to enjoy being the cook.

Jonathan made himself a nice way to hang the pot over the fire

That night we enjoyed Mac'N Cheese. Here Jonathan & Michelle are draining the water off the noodles. Notice Jonathan's hand made wooden spoon. He made himself a spatula too and I still use both in my kitchen at home. :-)

Next, Day 7 I guess it would be, we headed to an off trail lake. We spent two nights there and then headed back out. We spent one night at one of the lakes we’d already been to and then hiked that remaining 12 miles to the car. It was quite the trip, especially for the little people. That’s why you’ll see pictures of Jonathan & I carrying the little girls, Savannah & Rachel.

Mariya & Faith

Jonathan is well liked. :-)

We thought we were bunnies but I guess maybe we're donkeys.

After we got home from backpacking, we found our garden with ripe greenbeans, broccoli, tomatoes, squash, and more. I became quite busy processing all the food from the garden. We bought some Yakima peaches too and some pears that I made into Pear Butter which, btw, is extremely yummy. :-) I canned and dried 3 boxes of peaches. One box of pears made 2 batches of canned pear butter as well as some dried pears. I also dried some prune plums.

Here is a pile of green beans and some squash fromt he garden

This is how many green beans it took to do one batch of canned green beans. I used a pressure canner for the first time. It took me 5 hours from start to finish to figure out how everything worked and get through the process. The 2nd time I did it was much faster but still a lot of work. I was very thankful to be able to call Jonathan’s mom who had experience and have her help through the process. She’s a real blessing, I call her frequently with little questions about cooking, canning, sewing, cleaning, sickness and whatever else. Somehow she just seems to have all the answers! I’m very thankful to have a mother-in-law like her.

I was talking to Michelle one day and she informed me that she had tons of tomatoes in her garden and couldn’t use them fast enough. My tomatoes were pretty slow getting ripe and I was afraid I wouldn’t get enough for Salsa before the end of the year. So, Jonathan and I planned a visit to David’s house for the very next day. :-) I loaded up all my pint jars, thinking I probably couldn’t fill them all but I wanted to be prepared. When we got there, the kids helped us make quick work out of 36 lbs of tomatoes! I couldn’t believe it! Within 45 minutes we had completely filled Michelle’s biggest pot with chopped tomatoes! Must be nice to have all those helpers around all the time! By the time we were done, I had filled every last one of my pint jars with salsa and had to put the leftovers in a few of Michelle’s jars! I was very pleased to be able to have so much salsa. Thanks guys for the tomatoes and for all your help! It was fun.

A couple weeks ago Jonathan and I bought a woodstove. I’m so glad we’ll be able to heat with wood this winter. I get so tired of paying electric bills and it makes me want to shut the heat off all the time and just bundle up or tough out the cold. This winter I don’t need to worry about being cold. Thanks to a friend of Jonathan’s, we have plenty of firewood for the winter. God has been so good to us with all these blessings and the way he provides for us. Here’s a couple pictures of us getting the firewood.

Getting ready to unload 5 cords of free fire wood at our house. What a load!

And then for our most recent project. We just finished putting a new roof on our trailer. Jonathan and I tore the old roof off, Dad helped lay the new tar paper down and then David’s family and Dad came out and helped us lay the new shingles. It was a lot of work but fun because we were able to do it together. Below you’ll find the pictures of the project. I tried to get just the roof pictures to show up, but, all the backpacking pictures are showing up again too. Oh well. Enjoy the pictures. :-)

Children are an Heritage From the Lord

February 21st, 2011

Jonathan and I have 3 new neices, all one month apart! Lot’s of little ones around now! David and Michelle welcomed Annika to their family back in early December, right after Thanksgiving. Here is a picture of Aunt Mariya holding her.

Next Matthew and Mariya were surprised with their baby coming two months early! She wasn’t due until March but ended up being born in January. And she’s doing just great. They had to stay in the hospital with her for a very long time but they’re home now! Her name is Faith Mariya.

And then thirdly, James and Christina welcomed their 2nd baby girl, Laurel in February. And I got to be there for her birth as well. Here’s a picture of my dad holding her with big sister Mikayla watching.

Showers of Blessing

December 15th, 2010

After returning home from our honeymoon and getting settled into our new place, Jonathan and I decided we would hunt during late muzzleloader season for deer and elk. After spending several days tromping around in the woods, I was starting to get pretty discouraged. I had seen several deer and even had my gun miss-fire when I tried to shoot one of them. I hadn’t seen any elk at all. There was snow on the ground when we first started hunting which was very nice, it made it very easy to tell whether tracks were fresh or not and also easy to follow the trails. But, even with that advantage I still hadn’t been able to get anything. I was, however, enjoying the fellowship with other hunters (people from my church) and spending time in the woods…at least on the nice days. :-) But I was getting pretty tired of waking up at 4:30am, walking around in the woods alllll day long, getting soaked and cold on rainy days, and it was especially frustrating when the woods seemed to be lifeless.

When the alarm rang at 5am on Tuesday, November 30th I did not want to get up and go tromping around in the woods all day. I could hear the rain pouring on the roof. I knew I was going to be soaked and cold within an hour. But, I got up, put on my hunting clothes, ate some breakfast, and went to meet up with the others to go out hunting. I started praying for a deer as I sloshed my way down the muddy trail, already feeling the rain soaking through my gortex jacket.

We arrived at the clearcut and my hunting companions slipped into the cut at various points. I decided to walk a little higher than I had in the past before stepping out into the cut. I rounded a corner and spotted a deer grazing way up high on the hill ahead of me. I pointed it out to John, an experienced hunter, who was still with me to find out if he thought we could sneak up on it somehow. As we were discussing it, I caught motion out of the corner of my eye.  “There!” I said to John, as I cocked my gun and turned towards the two deer that started running up the hill right beside the road. As I excitedly pulled my gun to my shoulder to take aim John had to help me out, “No fooling around now, get down on one knee.” Oh that’s right, I thought, as I remembered that I could hold the gun steady if I was on one knee instead of standing up. “Now just wait.” John said as he put his elk call to his lips and made a noise to catch the deer’s attention. The two deer stopped to look back from the top of the rise, on of them standing broad-side to me. “Okay, take it!” John said. I already had her in my sights, I double checked my aim and pulled the trigger. “BOOM!” I eagerly looked up and watched with great disappointment as one deer ran to the right and the other ran to the left. “I missed.” I said. “Oh no you didn’t!” John said.

“But they both ran away.”

“You saw two run away?”

“Yes.”

“Well, that was a different deer then. You hit that deer, I’ve seen a lot of shots and I know you hit that deer. I saw it jump.”

He sent me out in the clearcut to look for the deer even though I was sure I had missed. I looked all around and just as I was about to give up I saw my deer laying about 8 feet from where I had shot her. “She’s over hear!!!” I yelled to John. “She’s over hear!”

Showers of Blessing

The bullet had gone right through the heart. I couldn’t believe it. I hadn’t really been very confident in my aim when I pulled the trigger. That’s why I was so sure I had missed when I saw two deer run away. God had just given me the deer I was praying for. I was glad to see the bullet went right through the heart because that meant she died right away and didn’t really have to suffer.

John helped me get the meat off the deer and then Pastor carried it out to the truck for me on his pack frame. I shot the deer at 9am and I was so tired and soaking wet already that I just decided to go home. I had violin lessons scheduled for the afternoon anyways. It sure was a blessing to be taking meet home with me at last.

Jonathan and I decided to name our deer Showers of Blessing because we knew God gave her to us, the meet was a great blessing, and I shot her while it was pouring rain.

California State Fair: July 14th – August 1st

August 4th, 2010

August 4th
Well, I thought I was going to give you an update each day while I was working the CA State Fair. But, things got busy and somewhat frustrating and it has taken me until now to actually sit down and write about it. Sorry about that. Thanks so much to those of you who prayed for the CA State Fair.

I worked the 1st week of the fair, July 14-20th. I worked the booth with Rob Holm and a few volunteers from the churches nearby. My parents made the trip to California with me because my grandparents live there and Dad wanted to do some work for them. It was nice to have my family there with me.

I remember from last year that the CA State Fair was challenging and the people were pretty hard. Many people wanted to argue their viewpoints, some would walk by the booth and mock us, but those who stopped to talk usually took eternity seriously – even if they didn’t agree with the Bible. So, I was shocked by the careless attitude people had towards eternity this year. I had several people stop to talk with me, but I felt as if they only stopped because they were trying to be polite. As I asked people how sure they were of going to heaven, I received a huge variety of answers, as usual. Taking the conversation a step further, people would tell me one could only get to heaven by asking forgiveness, being a good person, confessing your sins, getting baptized. Others would say that everyone was going to heaven and there was no such thing as hell. Some said that no one can know they’re going to heaven because it’s entirely God’s decision and all we can do is try to be good enough that God would chose to let us go to heaven. I found that most people who stopped to answer the question on the back wall were willing to let me take them through at least a few verses in the Bible. But it wasn’t because they were interested, it wasn’t because they thought there was anything for them to learn or think about, it was just a way of being polite to me. “So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper [in the thing] whereto I sent it. ” Isaiah 55:11. As I would take people through the verses, many many people seemed to know most of it. They knew that Jesus had died for their sin and they knew something had to be done with their sin before they could go to heaven. They would follow right along with me, agreeing with everything I showed them in the Bible, acting as if they already knew the information, until it came to the question of, how do you get Jesus. They would jump back to their original answers of how you get to heaven. They’d say you get Jesus by asking for forgiveness, being a good person, etc. Then when I showed them the verses that say you can’t do anything yourself to get Jesus (Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith;), that you just have to believe in Jesus and what he did for you on the cross (Rom 10:9, Acts 16:31, John 1:12, Gal 4:6) and then he comes into your heart because of your faith, then they would carelessly say something like this: “Oh well, I’m fine then ’cause I believe in Jesus.” And then they’d walk off wearing blatantly immodest clothing, shirts with sickening graphics, holding a beer in their hand, and just enjoying life right here and now. That’s all they seemed to care about; having fun with life right now – not giving any serious consideration to eternity.

I think I had about 10 really good conversations with people throughout the week. Only God truly knows whether or not it was a good conversation though. I can’t know what God will do through our efforts in California. The first day of the fair I spoke with a young man named Antoyne. As I took him through the law, a serious and thoughtful spirit came over him. He listened carefully and had some very good questions. When we were done talking he wrote “I learned that Jesus is the only way to get in heaven” on the back of his follow up card. He was also very excited about signing up for the mail box club, asking me how soon he could expect to get the first mailing. He left the booth deep in thought.

Here are a few of the things people wrote on follow up cards. Boy, age 15 “I learned what you think isn’t always truth.” 22 year old girl “I learned that you can be saved from everything you did in life if you believe in God.” And then 2 girls who grew up catholic wrote, “I learned that you do not simply ask for forgiveness to get to heaven but to have faith and to know and let Jesus into your heart. My other religious views and studies are enhanced and more views make sense.” These girls had tons of really good questions that were pretty easy to answer straight from scripture.

At the end of the week, Jonathan came and swapped out equipment with Rob so that Rob could go on to a different fair.

The very last day I was working the fair, I had a very good conversation with a 16 year old girl named Samantha. She came out of nowhere and walked right up to me and started asking me questions. She was eager to come into the booth and sit down and talk about things. She had an apostolic background and had been told that she would go to hell if she wore jeans and didn’t get forgiveness. She was told that if Jesus came back while she was wearing jeans, she wouldn’t get to go to heaven. After taking her through the gospel and clearing up her questions about salvation, she asked me questions about modesty, long hair, make up, jewelry, and other things like that. Those things are so important to a girl and it was a blessing to be able to give her answers from a Biblical perspective rather than a “work your way to heaven” perspective. She wrote, “One does not need to be Apostolic/UPC/Pentecostal to be saved. Because man cannot pay for it, it is completely in God’s hands. But, one does need faith.”

I took this picture of Jonathan last year at the CA State Fair. Dad took this picture of me on the way home from CA this year.

Jonathan worked the 2nd week of the CA State fair so you can read about it on his blog: California State Fair And his brother Allen and his dad worked the 3rd and final week of the fair.

Your prayers are still needed as the Clark County Fair starts on Friday. It runs from August 6th – August 15th. I’m really looking forward to this fair because volunteers will be coming to help from my own church, God’s Word Baptist Church. It will be a blessing to serve the Lord with my own church family. May we be “labourers together with God” as we work at our local fair.

July 15th
The fair is going pretty well so far. I have been able to get several people thinking through our conversations which is good. Today I had a very good conversation with 2 girls who grew up Catholic. They had a lot of questions about things they were confused about and thankfully most of their questions were easy for me to answer. Pray for them, that they wouldn’t forget the things we talked about. Also pray for a young man I talked to yesterday who was very disturbed by his sin as I took him through the law. He was deep in thought when he left the booth.

July 14th
I just wanted to let you know that I am working in the Soul Winning Booth with Amazing Grace Missions at the CA State Fair in Sacramento from July 14th (today) through July 21st. I would greatly appreciate your prayers for the event. Pray that we would remember the truth of 2 Cor 3:5 “Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;”. Pray that we would open our mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel. Pray that the Holy Spirit would work in the hearts of the people according to His perfect will. And pray that we would not get discouraged but that we would remember that success is simply sharing Jesus with others.

I will post updates here regularly so please check back. Thank you so much for your prayers! Have a productive day in the Lord. -Suzanne

Engagement Photos

July 28th, 2010

He asked me! And I said YES!!!

June 8th, 2010

Holding the ring in my hand, I was talking to Suzanne on the phone and came really close to slipping up a few times by accidentally saying what I was thinking about, until the sun sparkled through the diamond and I said “that’s really pretty!” Almost instantly she asked “what’s pretty?” Uh oh! I thought as my mind began to race thinking how I would get myself out of this one. After carefully wiggling my way out I thought – Whew! I’d better get that ring on her finger quick before I really mess up!

The week before I had taken her dad and mom out to eat and talked over some engagement and wedding dates with them. At the time, I was thinking about proposing to her on June 5th. However, the next day I went ring shopping with her sister Christina and decided on a ring that I had been thinking about for a while. Now, with the ring in my hand, I thought over all my proposal ideas. Something just wasn’t quite right; they were a little too traditional for my liking, and I suspected that Suzanne would catch on what I was up to if I did that.

Remembering that Suzanne and I were going fishing that weekend, everything started coming together in my mind, so I waited till Suzanne had gone to teach violin and called her parents to ask if they would be okay with me proposing to her that weekend which they said was fine.

As I was talking to Jonathan on the phone, he suddenly said, “that’s really pretty!” I tried to get him to tell me what was so pretty but he wouldn’t budge. When I got off the phone, I told Mom about it and told her I thought he must have been looking at rings on a website or something. I didn’t really think much of it because I knew Jonathan was shopping for my ring. He’d been shopping for and talking to me about rings for several weeks.

Saturday Jonathan and I were planning to go fishing. I woke up early and started getting things ready for our fishing trip. Jonathan was supposed to arrive about 8 am, but I figured he might sleep in. I called him at about 7:30 to see if he was on his way or not, and wasn’t surprised to find that he hadn’t even gotten out of bed yet. I encouraged him to hurry up and come see me and then continued preparing things for the day. I packed my backpack with fishing stuff, got some lunch together, and did some necessary chores around the house. I also put some things away that I didn’t want to risk Jonathan seeing; different surprises I had for him. I had made Jonathan a gift to give him the day we got engaged but I was taking my time completely finishing it because I wanted to be able to tell him his surprise wasn’t done yet whenever he’d ask me about it. Mom saw me hiding my engagement present for him and asked me if I was sure I didn’t want to wrap it so it’d be ready – I said “Mom, it’s not like we’re getting engaged today or anything!”

That morning was really rainy, and I was tired from working all week so I decided I would just sleep in a little bit. After all, I figured Suzanne would be less suspecting if I didn’t act like there was anything special happening that day. Carefully tucking the ring in my right pocket, I loaded my car and said goodbye to my family. Mom told me she would be praying for sun, and I was too; it certainly didn’t seem like a very good day for asking a girl to marry me.

As I got off the freeway and started heading to her house, I nearly forgot to stop at the store and buy my Washington fishing license. Thankfully they didn’t require any bridal tags, the lure and out of state fishing license was already expensive enough! Before long though I was at her house loading up the poles and other gear; seeing my church clothes sitting in the back of my car I said “how about we put these inside” she thought that was a good idea, so I took them inside. As soon as I lay my church clothes down I went to show Mrs. Farnell the ring and tell her what my plans were for the day, but just as Mrs. Farnell saw the ring, Suzanne walked in the front door wondering what was taking me so long. I didn’t want her to wonder what I was talking to her mom about, so thinking on my feet I looked over at the kitchen table, and spying some leftover biscuits from breakfast I said “oh, how about we take some biscuits with us!” – Whew! That was close ;-)

I kept myself busy until Jonathan got to my house around 10am. After eating some breakfast, we loaded our fishing stuff into his car and were about ready to leave. He took his church clothes out of the back of his car and said he was going to take them in the house. I didn’t know he was planning to stay for church the next day too! How exciting! I waited outside while he took his clothes in the house. After putting all my things in the car, I headed back in the house to see why he hadn’t come back out yet. I saw him in the kitchen talking to Mom. I wondered what he was doing, but knew he likes to surprise me with little things frequently. I figured he was just letting Mom know he was staying for Sunday too. Jonathan suggested that I get some biscuits to take with us and then we headed back out the door.

We enjoyed the beautiful drive up the Lewis River to our special fishing spot on one of the dams. I found the fisherman’s trail down the ridge to the lake; we grabbed our things out of the car and headed down the hill. As we climbed down the ridge, we found a nice spot to take a couple pictures with Swift Reservoir in the background. When we got down to the lake and started getting our poles ready for fishing, I saw Jonathan looking around at the scenery and the sky. I asked him what he was looking at and he said nothing and then commented that his mom had said she’d pray for sun. I noticed the sun was starting to come through the clouds and thought it was nice of his mom to pray for sun for our fishing trip, though it did seem a little odd. But, I wanted to show Jonathan I knew how to catch a fish so I just went right back to getting my pole ready for fishing. I was quite the focused fisherman that morning, lucky for Jonathan.

After getting our poles all ready for fishing, Jonathan suggested that I fish first. Again, I thought that was a little strange but didn’t give it much thought because I still really wanted to show Jonathan I knew how to catch a fish. :-) I figured that since we had never been fishing together before, he must just want to watch me fish. He was still messing with his pole too so I figured he must not be quite ready. When he said I should fish first, I shrugged my shoulders, took a few steps down towards the water and went about my business fishing.

Arriving at the fishing hole I thought – this is just perfect, and the sun is coming out too. Thank you Lord! Suzanne was busy getting her pole ready, so I took off my rain coat and felt my pocket to make sure the ring was still safely tucked inside while I started to get my pole ready too. The first swivel I tied on broke which wasn’t very comforting, but after carefully checking the second one I decided it would be okay and asked Suzanne if she would like to go first. As soon as she turned her back I quickly took the lure off my line, and reaching in my pocket pulled out the ring. since I knew I would be using someone else’s pole, the night before I had tied about 3 feet of fishing line on the ring with a slip knot at the end so that I could quickly tie the line to the pole if I didn’t have a swivel. Since I did have a swivel I cut the line off the ring, but about then Suzanne turned around and looked at me. She didn’t seem to be suspecting of anything so I carried on, and she said “I’m not impressed.” Clipping the ring on to the swivel, I said “just watch, I bet I’ll catch one on the first cast.”

As I threw the line over her shoulder my heart and mind were racing thinking this is it I hope it works! At first she seemed to be a little annoyed at me, then she turned her head and said “what are you doing!?” Dangling the line over her shoulder didn’t seem to be working, so I started swinging it in front of her face, then all of sudden she dropped her pole and grabbed the ring, holding it tightly in her fist as I reeled her up the hill to where I was standing.

Jonathan was messing around with his pole behind me as I cast into the lake several times. I wasn’t getting any bites so I looked over my shoulder at Jonathan and said, “I’m not impressed.” With a silly grin on his face he teasingly said, “well, I bet I can catch one on the first cast.” I just ignored his comment and kept fishing. Next thing I knew, Jonathan was dangling his fishing line over my shoulder. Thinking it had a hook on it, I was slightly annoyed with him and tried to push the line away as I wondered why he would want to hook me. And then I saw it. There was no hook on that line! The lure was MY RING!!!!! I couldn’t believe this was really happening. In fact, I was afraid to believe it was the real thing because Jonathan had given me a hose clamp just for fun a few weeks earlier. My mind was racing instantly as I grabbed the ring and clasped it tightly in my hand. Could it be!? Was he really going to propose to me? Here!? Right now??? As I turned and looked at him, I knew it was really happening. My Jonathan was going to ask me to marry him!

“I got one! I got one!” I said, reeling her up the hill “I told you I would catch one on the first cast!” All she could do was stand there and smile at me, so taking the ring off the line I got down on my right knee and said “will you marry me?” And you know what? She said YES!

We’re getting married!!! On September 18th, 2010!!! I love you Jonathan!!!…

Llamas for sale!

April 2nd, 2010

Yes, you read that right. My llamas are for sale. I have no need for them anymore so I’m looking for some good homes to send them to. If you know anyone that might be interested, let me know.

I’ve owned llamas for at least 14 years now! It’s hard to believe it’s really been that long. I’ve learned a lot of lessons from my animals over the years. Lessons about responsibility, diligence, trust, obedience, authority, etc. If possible, I think it’s really important for kids to raise pets. There’s so much to learn from animals.

Chocolate Oreo

Chocolate Oreo

This is Oreo. He sure is a good looking llama. He’s super friendly too. I’ve always thought he’d make a great pack llama because he’s got a strong build. But, I’ve just never been diligent enough to train him to do that. I got Oreo when he was about 3 months old. He’s already 7 years old! Time sure goes by fast!!!

Chocolate Oreo

Chocolate Oreo

Sforzando Black Bear

Sforzando was born at my house. He’s 4 years old now. You’re probably thinking, “Why the funny name?” Well, when you’ve had animals your whole life, you start to run out of things to name them. :-) You musicians already know this but, a sforzando is a musical term…a dynamic marking that happens to be one of my favorites. I know it doesn’t really make sense to name your llama after a music term but….so what! :-P

Sugar Bear

Sugar Bear

Sugar is the mother to them all. She’s 12 years old already! Infact, her birthday was yesterday, lol. I figured that out as I was looking at her papers a few minutes ago. I think she’s the best trained llama I’ve ever owned. The lady that owned her before me used to take her to the fairs and do the obstacle courses with her. I’ve always thought that’d be fun but again, never had the diligence to do it.

I have one other young llama that is gray and white. I don’t have any pictures of him though. He is also one of Sugar Bear’s babies. His name is Scherzo…yes, that’s a music term also. ;-)

It’s interesting to think about getting rid of my llamas. They’ve been around for so long, the place just won’t be the same without them. But, they need a better home now. I’ve moved on to other things in life and I just can’t take care of them anymore. I am keeping my goats; they still have a purpose of keeping the blackberries under control around here.
